Adult & Beginner Guitar Lessons in Richmond VA
Guitar lessons for adults who always meant to learn
Most of John's adult students fall into two groups: people who never played and finally have the time, and people who played years ago and want to get back to it. Both get the same thing — a lesson plan built around the music you want to play, at your pace, one to one. No group class, no semester commitment; lessons are month to month.
Am I too old to learn guitar?
No. Adults learn differently from children — they understand what they are practising and why — and John has taught beginners of every age for over 15 years. One adult student put it this way: "He's extremely knowledgeable and extremely patient and studying with him is lots of fun." The only requirement is a little regular practice between lessons.
Do I need to own a guitar before the first lesson?
Talk to John before you buy anything. Acoustic, classical and electric guitars suit different music, and the right choice depends on what you want to play — a five-minute conversation saves a wrong purchase. [JOHN: say whether a studio guitar is available for the first lesson or two]
Which styles can I learn?
If there is a style you want to learn, John can teach it: classical, jazz, blues, folk, country, bluegrass, worship, rock — plus music theory, songwriting, improvisation and recording. He has toured with rock groups and holds a master's degree in guitar performance and pedagogy from UNC School of the Arts, so both the "play a song this month" and the "understand what I'm doing" approaches are on the table.
