Kids learn guitar fastest when the lesson is about music they actually like and the teacher is patient enough to let them get there. That is how John teaches: one student at a time, in a quiet home studio in Mechanicsville, with a plan written for that child. Younger children (ages 4–12) usually start with the Suzuki guitar method; older kids and teens take private lessons in the style they want — rock, classical, worship, country, blues, whatever they are listening to.
Lessons are month to month with no semester minimum, so you can start whenever your child is ready.
What happens in a first guitar lesson?
The first lesson is a conversation as much as a lesson: John finds out what music your child likes, looks at the guitar they have (or helps you choose the right size before you buy one), and gets them playing something on day one. For Suzuki students the lesson is 30 minutes, and games for rhythm, coordination and listening are part of it — young children are not expected to hold a guitar for half an hour straight.
What age should a child start guitar lessons?
Suzuki students at the studio range from 4 to 12, and John is one of the few registered Suzuki guitar instructors in the Richmond area. There is no upper limit — teenagers who want to play in a band or at church start in private lessons straight away. If you are unsure whether your child is ready, call and ask; a short conversation usually settles it.
Do parents stay in the lesson?
For Suzuki students, yes — a parent attends and becomes the "home teacher", learning the basics alongside the child so practice at home goes smoothly. The method depends on that encouragement. For older kids it is up to you and them.
